Ive been making a game and I want to add a lot of flavour to my character creation system, so ive been doing a lot of research. So far ive looked at cenrral castings heroes of legend and harnmaster. Ive been thinking of grabbing artesia adventures in the known world and hackmaster 4th edition.Looking for more fantasy systems where it might just be fun to make a character in it.
My setting is like dark souls, and berserk. The game is about building a civilization and exploring. The characters arent neccesarily skilled or trained in doing so.What do you recommend for helping players seed their characters with interesting history, relations, or aspects to their characters?. Burning Wheel and Beyond the Wall are probably my favourites for this - Burning Wheel has the character burner, where you choose a life path that got your PC to where they are today. Beyond the Wall involves picking a playbook pbta style to decide the style of character you want to play, and then rolling on tables to get your stats and a list of events that got them there. The former is great for campaigns, while the latter is designed specifically to get a party of 4-6, all with a little bit of history and some built in relationships, created in roughly 30 minutes for a one shot.I rather like life path character generation - whether random or not, it tends to lead to interesting characters with far less effort required. A lot of PbtA games. I specifically recall creating my first Monsterhearts character with one sort of character idea in mind, then picking moves and origins and such and realizing 'Oh.
She's not the shy cutesy goth girl, she's actually kinda a power hungry bitch.' Which I love, and it's why I never go into character creation with a super defined idea any more. I try to let the mechanical choices I make feedback into how I view and play my character.More recently with Monsterhearts, I was rereading the Fae options and BAM, I had a character based off this guy I knew in highschool + Puck from A Midsummer Night's Dream. Perfect, would play.(Good) PbtA games usually hit me with those kinds of characters nowadays. After the initial read through, I'll have 1-4 amazing character concepts I wanna play RIGHT NOW.
